Advantages

Reaches clients experiencing barriers

ā€œCan reach rural clients who donā€™t have transportation or access. ā€˜Cause if somebody lives a couple hours away from any service provider, thatā€™s a significant barrier to coming in and accessing treatment.ā€

ā€œSometimes my clients will say, ā€˜I canā€™t afford to come and see you. I donā€™t have gas money.ā€™ And so itā€™s cheaper to [go online].ā€

ā€œ[Can reach] people with health issues. ā€˜Cause I have a gentleman who has a lot of hip issues right now, and so I just do contact over the phone instead of him coming in cos that was a huge barrier for him.ā€

ā€œ[Can reach people with] mental health issues too. Phobias.ā€

ā€œThey might be more comfortable because of the stigma piece.ā€

ā€œI have several gambling clients that are in rural areas so theyā€™re about an hour, an hour and a half away ā€¦ and so I sit at my desk and remote in with them.ā€

Promotes client-centred care

ā€œIt gives the clients the power, the opportunity to choose what they want, what they feel they need at that time.ā€

ā€œCould be anonymous if people want to.ā€

Frees up time for clinicians

ā€œItā€™s time for me. Itā€™s like any other client that I know is going to be there just clicks on, boom, the clientā€™s there, I see them, see the next client thatā€™s in the waiting room. I donā€™t have to drive too. I donā€™t have travel time. I donā€™t have anything, really, except to sign in and it pops up.ā€

Increases uptake

ā€œI think it could generate more numbers for our programs if people could connect and do like an assessment or screening and then come in to see us.ā€

Disadvantages

Decreases trust

ā€œAm I trusting without knowing whoā€™s behind that name online?ā€

ā€œConfidentiality could be breached.ā€

Comes with technological limitations

ā€œYou only see a proportion [on the screen].ā€

ā€œSometimes technology fails us.ā€

Reduces quality of therapeutic work

ā€œDistractions from our end ā€˜cause I even find if Iā€™m on the phone with a client, I might be sometimes multitasking, like, Iā€™m not even focusing.ā€

Comes with its own barriers

ā€œClients canā€™t always afford the Internet, or own a computer.ā€
