Table 1 Guidelines for an Extubation Trial

From: Parameter selection for and implementation of a web-based decision-support tool to predict extubation outcome in premature infants

Infant

with spontaneous respiratory effort above set ventilator rate

without evidence of respiratory failure (such as intercostals retractions, poor chest wall movement) and respiratory rate <80 breaths/minute

with apneic or bradycardic events that decreased in severity and frequency following initiation of methylxanthine therapy

Ventilator rate

≤20 breaths/minute

FiO2 requirement

<40%

Blood gas parameters in the normal range

for arterial blood gas determinations:

pH ≥ 7.25

pCO2 <60–64

for capillary blood gas determinations:

pH ≥7.2

pCO2 <70

Saturation (SaO2)

consistently >90%
